Flush it! Water Usage Indicates Canada’s Obsession for Hockey

by Spencer Loomis

No other country loves a sport like Canada loves hockey.  Need proof?  Look no further than Edmonton’s water consumption the day of the Olympic Men’s Hockey final and compare it to the previous day.  Outrageous fluctuations in water consumption from the start of the game until the medal ceremony highlight the importance of every second of that game to the Great White North.

The cause in fluctuation is obvious, and it’s not Canadians getting in quick showers or rehydrating between periods.  Simultaneous bathroom use explains these hilarious troughs and crests that are illustrative of the fervor of Canadian hockey fans.

In the US, our most passionately followed sport is professional football. However, the NFL’s championship does not exhibit this type of extreme water consumption fluctuation over the course of the game.  The Super Bowl is the biggest advertising day of the year and the only sports event that has even non-sports fans tuning in just for the ads.  As a result, not as many viewers step away from the game in between the on field action.

While Super Bowl ratings are higher than any hockey game including the Olympic final, Canadian hockey fans clearly commit to watching every second of the game more so than American football fans.

So do Americans love football as much as Canadians love hockey? Not according to the flushes.
