Uruguay play to the death. They’re three – one down with eighty-five minutes played and five minutes to go, and my friends decide to leave the bar. Poor decision. I decided to stay and suddenly Uruguay score and all hell breaks loose.

They sweep in ball after ball. Dutch women at the bar are screaming. The man who has been quietly supporting Uruguay for the whole game is going nuts. He wants another goal.

The World Cup Quarterfinal match between the Netherlands and tournament favorites Brazil ended with an unexpected 2:1 victory to the Dutch, as they battled back from an early 1:0 deficit. The Dutch, having conceded an early goal to Manchester City’s Robinho in the 10th minute, rallied to progress as the wind ran quickly out of Brazil’s sails.

Bill Clinton stole the show over the US’s last two games, making a post game locker room appearance and cheering on our boys side by side with Mick Jagger.

SPORTS BIZ Speaking as an Englishman, to hear someone telling you that they dislike a sport, but watch its biggest game “for the commercials” is a tricky concept to get your head around.

The only sporting events in the UK that come even close to the national TV audience pull of the Super Bowl is when the England national team reaches the knockout stages of the World Cup. Reportedly, Terry was hooking up with lingerie model Vanessa Perroncell, former girlfriend of Wayne Bridge, his England team mate. More than a simple liaison, he also allegedly got her pregnant, and than arranged for an abortion.
